No Board Meeting JULY 2022 due to lack of quorum and summer vacation schedules.
Next Board meeting scheduled for Thursday Sept 15th at 9am via Zoom.
July 2022 Concession Street updates:
Board Business:
AGM/Elections:
We need to decide on an AGM date. This will also be centered around our upcoming Board elections. If we choose the third Thursday in October (Oct 20th) that will give me the deadline date of Sept 5th to send out reminders and eligibility for anyone interested in running for the next term(2022-2025).
We also need two Board Directors to act as Election Officials. These are to ensure impartiality for any BIA member wanting to run and getting their name on the election ballot (only if we have more candidates than available spots). Currently our Board should be 6 Directors as per our Procedural By-Law.
KPMG Audit:
Everything has been submitted to KPMG. All looks in order. We have our preliminary draft from KPMG that again, I will share with our Executive (Vice Chair and Treasurer) for review. If no issues are identified, we are in good financial standing – and ready to present at our AGM.
Financials:
Joel will be preparing our statements to date. I will share these with the Board once received.
All Streetfest expenditures have been processed. Total cost for this event came in at $36,173.21. Our budget for this event was $34,083.85. A bit over budget but there were some unforeseen expenses (city now charging almost $1500 for waste and recycling bins that we did not pay for in the past). Next year it will not be an election year so if the city continues to charge this, we can leverage our city councillors to help financially as they were unable this year because of the proximity to the municipal elections. This also holds true for councillor sponsorships which we were also not able to get this year for the same reason. Given that the day was an overwhelming success for our small businesses (EVERYONE I have spoken to had unprecedented sales that day), the overage is well worth our BIA mandate.
A survey will be sent out in the coming weeks/months for BIA member feedback on what they liked, didn’t like with this years Streetfest. This was our return to such a big in person event post pandemic so we had to scale some things back. We do this festival to benefit first and foremost our membership. This will be your opportunity to share what you would like to see more/less of. Build this event moving forward as per your direction.
Marketing:
Our Digital billboards continue and are generating great attention to our BIA. Updated images will be loaded in the coming week(s).
Our Digital promotion campaign is doing VERY well. Generating over 3000 hits to our website. We have been provided with a Performance Results Report that I will be sharing with all of you.
Events:
Sidewalk Sounds continues the third Saturday of each month until September. We have bumped up to 5 performances on each date.
10am to noon: courtyard in front of 576 Concession
11am to 1pm: Flashbacks Hamilton at 411 Concession
Noon to 2pm: under the pergola of At Your Service at 569 Concession
2pm to 4pm: parking lot of Mountain Tire at 593 Concession
3pm to 5pm: under the marquee of The Zoetic at 526 Concession
All entertainers are listed on our BIA website: Sidewalk Sounds - CONCESSION STREET BIA
We encourage all businesses to set up sidewalk sales outside to add to the attraction for the community.
BookCrawl is also scheduled for these same days 10am to 1pm at pre- approved locations along Concession.
September will also host two extra performers to have our music series go out with a bang….all performers have been updated on our BIA website.
BIA updates:
The City of Hamilton is funding a Summer Concert Series. They are paying for a day of musical performances at participating BIA’s (of course we are one of them). Our scheduled date is Saturday August 13th at 2pm. They have secured New Moon Junction (modern country trio) and are working on our second musician. Both will be performing at the Mountain Tire parking lot as they are closed at noon in August so the lot is fully available. Promo material will also be provided by the City. I am in the process of building a page on our Events lineup on our BIA website too.
Fall for Concession is scheduled for the first two Saturdays in October. I am starting to work out what we can safely do for this sidewalk sale day on Concession. It is meant to be primarily focused on outside sidewalk sales by our members. We will definitely be adding musicians (2 or 3 each Saturday). I am in discussions with Dirty South to see about how we can leverage businesses that currently have a liquor license so we can create a kind of Oktoberfest with some “beer gardens”/patios. I am also working with Flow Lifestyle to create a kind of Makers Market called “Go with the Flow Makers Market” leveraging her suppliers to create a cool marketplace strip. I will also be reaching out to some of our food establishments to ask them to create fall themed goodies (like CandiWerx candied apples and flavoured caramel popcorn, Crumbuns Fall themed cookies, maybe Stoneroads, Stage Diner and Dirty South for a Fall special menu item like a nice soup or other Fall dishes. More details to come.
There is a new mural coming to 402 Concession (east wall of Yimee’s). Clear Eyes Collective has been commissioned to create this art piece that should be completed by end of August 2022. Many thanks to furnaceprices.ca who is sponsoring this mural!
Business updates:
Kryptonian Ink is opening a second location in Newfoundland. Stephen, the owner is relocating to NFLD. His location here on Concession will remain open and be managed by Marina (currently working at this location).
Sloth Core Fitness has closed its doors at 426A Concession. Sherri is Stephen’s wife and they are all relocating to NFLD.
Good Friends Sandwich Company has unfortunately closed their doors at 522 Concession .
HFC currently closed for renovations. Sign on front door says they will be reopening in August 2022.
Dollarama is on target to open their doors on August 1st, 2022.
Townhall Social Eatery is on track to open very soon.
Wow Pop Chicken & Pizza will be opening this Fall at 760 Concession.
A new healthy food café will be opening at the former location of Sanghera Laundromat. Renovations under way and targeting a Fall opening.
That’s all for now.
